The Sky is Falling

November 30, 2011

We hear that the Sky TV coverage of the Miracle Mile was marred by an audio blackout, requiring Greg Hayes to call the first 400m of our premier race. Doof. Another kick to harness racing’s guts. And the small fry during the midweek meetings. These were the midweek meetings where Emilio Rosati complained he wasn’t sitting on a level playing field in a rather comical SMH article this week.

The $12k purchases from NZ (like Gidup The Avenger, Gidup Tuscany Gold, Our Mr Darcy and Splendifferous) were coming out here, not able to win in under 2 minutes in Kiwi land and blasting 1.54’s here at Menangle.
Emilio even went so far as to say ‘that doesn’t happen’.  Hate to spoil your party Emilio, but it does!  Seems any horse that wins a race not called ‘Stride’ is a drug cheat. He should call one of his horses ‘Hypocrite Stride’.  Would be apt.

Anyway we digress. He went on to say ‘ The bottle was ruling again…’ . you bet it was. The celebratory bottles of beer when our $12k purchases would blast out the big 1.54’s. We certainly hit a few bottles there Emilio, don’t you worry.
So it came toTuesday, and another one of our cheap Kiwi purchases was about to blast out a 1.54 much to Emilio’s delight. Unfortunately we weren’t able to see the tightest of tight finishes as the cameraman was focused on 3rd, some 20m behind the two titans going head to head. That was shocking camera work. All we could see were the rumps of the two horses up the front. Not their heads on the line where the decision is made.

There has been a slow deterioration of the camera work quality recently in harness racing. Not just in NSW but interstate as well.  How do they stuff it up?  I guess we will never be able to view the actual finish but doesn’t matter, we lost the photo….no doubt Emilio would have been gutted, seeing one of the cheap Kiwi purchases get rolled.
Incidentally we were rolled by another ex Kiwi in FLASHBANG.  Its best mile rate in NZ? 2.06.5.   Went 1.55.0 today at Menangle.  Shows it does happen. There are millions of other examples.
Being the sport’s biggest owner in the state does not make you right.
